Biblical Womanhood: How to find your modest fashion style

Next in the Biblical Woman Starter Pack is modesty. Dressing modestly has gained popularity across many Christian, Muslim, Hebrew Israelite, and spiritual platforms. Looking at different content creators and influencers has created a spectrum of what is considered modest today. There are many nuances within the Israelite community when it comes to modesty. Some will say that women shouldn’t ever wear pants, you must have fringes on all outfits, your head must be covered at all times, etc. Like I said, there is a spectrum when it comes to what’s considered modest.

As a general rule of thumb, if you have to adjust what you’re wearing because of the length, it’s probably too short. If it rides up as you walk, it’s probably too short and too tight. If it causes men to lust after you (which I will admit won’t take much), it’s probably best to avoid it. If what you’re wearing could be considered sexy, it might be best to stay away from that too for obvious reasons (the name kinda gives it away), unless you’re with your husband. As women, we know what gets the people going! So if you have to second guess, it might be best to choose something else. If we’re called to be set apart from the world, we should try our hardest to portray an image of a woman who loves The Most High and loves herself enough to dress in a classy and respectable manner.

Benefits of Dressing Modestly

When I was first told by righteous counsel in my life to begin dressing more modestly, at first I was taken aback. But then as I reviewed my closet and go-to items, literally everything was mini, bodycon, cropped, or ripped. Any opportunity I had to show some skin and my figure, I took every single one. No matter how uncomfortable or inconvenient. But after I received that wisdom from my brothers, one of which is my husband today, I went straight to my closet and started ripping stuff off the hangers. I can talk about my relationship with YAH all I want, but if someone can’t tell that I’m different from the world before I even speak, then I have a problem!

Once I started dressing modestly, I noticed a significant change. Men started approaching me differently. The lustful and sexual undertones and innuendos vanished. Men sought to properly court me. They wanted to take me on dates and that’s all. I noticed that they respected me more. So then I was able to debunk the myth that all men think about is sex and like loose women. Real men actually prefer the opposite because they’re looking for wives, not girlfriends.

Shopping for Modest Clothing and Head Scarves

After I got rid of basically my entire closet, I didn’t know where and how I was going to rebuild my attire. I’ve always loved fashion, so having to start over wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, I just didn’t know where to start. At the time, my sistah Zhatéyah and I lived together and there was a thrift shop not far from our apartment. That was the beginning of it all. We literally rebuilt our wardrobe from a thrift store. I was actually happy that I couldn’t find what I was looking for in fast fashion stores or at the mall. The thrift store had quality items that were unlike anything other twenty-something women were wearing. It automatically made me stand out! And I was able to truly discover my style.

My Recommendation

It’s my recommendation for any sistah reading this to check out thrift stores and consignment stores in your area. You can find really quality one of one items for cheap. And don’t even get me started on the accessories. I would say that 85% of my head wraps all came from the thrift store. Great quality headwraps that I’m able to wear in a myriad of ways. Modest fashion has allowed me to tap into my creativity when it comes to fashion while also respecting my body and The Most High.
